rganic produce
has become increasingly popular at Gelson's. People are not only
concerned with the environment, but they are concerned about the food that they
are feeding their families. At any one time you may see up to 50 different
organic produce items featured at Gelson's.
WHAT DOES ORGANICALLY GROWN MEAN?
In accordance with Section 26569.11 of the California Health and Safety Code,
organically grown refers to a system of producing high-quality fruits and
vegetables without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides, fertilizers,
herbicides, or fungicides.
Organic foods must be produced, harvested, distributed, stored, processed, and
packaged without the use of these substances. It is a system that uses cultural
practices such as crop rotation, compost and animal manures, naturally occurring
minerals for soil building, biological and cultural methods of pest control, and
hand and machine cultivation of weeds.
Any product that is labeled organically grown is done so in compliance with state
laws that define and regulate organic products. All products sold and labeled
as organic must meet the requirements of the law.
WHERE IS ORGANIC PRODUCE GROWN?
Organic produce is grown all over this country and in many other countries as
well. The majority of organic produce sold at Gelson's, however, is grown right
here in California.
WHY BUY ORGANIC PRODUCE?
Organic food production builds and sustains topsoil, promotes biodiversity, gives
us food that is free of pesticide residues, and renews the biological health of
soil. Organic farming practices also reduce the need to produce, transport,
handle, and disperse harmful chemicals. It helps keep our drinking water and
recreational waterways clean.
By purchasing organically grown produce, you are promoting a cleaner, less
polluted environment and increasing the long-term fertility of our soils
