How to Grill Salmon Like a Pro at Home
A simple grilled salmon is one of the quickest, easiest proteins you can make for dinner. And yet, like a really good steak, it’s incredibly satisfying when it’s done right.
The ingredients here are as basic as it gets: fresh salmon, salt, pepper, and lemon. That means all the magic happens on the grill. Start by heating the grill well—salmon loves high heat. Lightly oil the grates, then place the fish, skin‑side down, so it releases cleanly and crisps rather than sticking.
We put the lemons directly on the grill, letting them char until they’re caramelized and juicy. That quick hit of heat transforms the lemon juice into something smoky, pulpy, and lightly sweet—perfect for finishing the fish.
The salmon itself only needs a few minutes over the flame. Let it cook undisturbed at first, then rotate it 90° partway through to get those chef‑y crosshatch grill marks and an even, crispy sear. Pro tip: resist the urge to flip too early—when the fish is ready, it will naturally release from the grill.
The result is a salmon fillet that’s tender and flaky on the inside, beautifully crisp on the outside, and finished with a bright squeeze of smoky lemon. Simple, fast, and absolutely satisfying—weeknight perfection.
Pro Grilling Tips (at home):
Start with room‑temperature salmon for more even cooking
Oil the grill, not the fish, to prevent sticking
Keep the lid closed to lock in heat and gentle smoke
Finish with flaky salt and grilled lemon juice, not extra seasoning
If you’re having a busy week, round out the plate with a salad or two from the Gelson’s Kitchen.

Serves: 2
Ingredients
Directions
Heat the grill to medium-high.
Pat the salmon dry with a paper towel and season both sides with salt and pepper.
Put the lemon on the grill, cut-side down, and cook for 10 minutes.
Drizzle the grapeseed oil over the fish, then place it flesh-side down on the grill. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, and then turn 90 degrees and cook for 2 to 3 more minutes. Tip: Turning the salmon will help it cook evenly and crisp up. It’ll also give you cool grill marks.
Flip the fish and repeat step 4.
Transfer the fish to a platter and squeeze the charred lemon over it. Serve immediately.
